Introduction...|
The English surname Kisby originated a few miles north of the town of Bourne in Lincolnshire, England.
Five miles south of Bourne is the small village of Langtoft, lying in flat Fenland countryside on the main road to Market Deeping. The
small churchyard of St Michael's church contains a row of Kisby gravestones and, sure enough, it turns out that Langtoft was a hotbed for
Kisby's during the early nineteenth century (maybe for many decades before that too).
The Langtoft Kisby's may not have been short of money, judging by the lavish gravestone of Joseph Kisby's wife, Mary Ann. They were probably farmers and, certainly, Joseph's brother was a shepherd and retired as a 'gentleman'. Joseph's family in particular continued to live locally and, in the early yeasr of the twentieth century, Joseph's grandson William was the town postman in Market Deeping. It would be fascinating to hear from any decendents of the Langtoft Kisby's! |
